Cereals and cereal products are a good source of energy, carbohydrate, protein and fibre. They also contain a range of vitamins and minerals such as vitamin E, some of the B vitamins, magnesium and zinc. Wholegrain cereals contain more fibre and B vitamins.
Oats in particular contain high levels of soluble fibre. The inclusion of oats as part of a diet low in saturated fat and a healthy lifestyle can help reduce blood cholesterol.
There is evidence to suggest that regular consumption of cereals, specifically wholegrains, may have a role in the prevention of chronic diseases. Although there is still more scientific work to do, people who consume diets rich in wholegrain cereals seem to have lower levels of coronary heart disease and type 2 diabetes.
Cereals, in the form of wheat flour, oat flour or wholegrains are the basis of most biscuit recipes. Cereals are also present in many savoury snacks - in the form of rice, maize or corn flour.
